I have used only 7-zip, not the others so I will speak about it.

7-zip is NOT an alternative to Winrar. It does recognize, open and create rar files but that’s all. It doesn’t allow you to add or remove files in the rar archive.

Furthermore, 7-zip doesn’t recognize multiple part rar archives. 7-zip will uncompress only the first rar and will ignore r01, r02 etc. I blundered once and after uncompressing one such archive with 7-zip, I deleted all the files. It was late when I realized that 7-zip had uncompressed only the first part.

The fact that 7-zip simply recognizes the rar format while lacking these properties, doesn’t consist it an “alternative”.

Now if I am wrong feel free to correct me and tell me how I can enable these features on 7-zip. Also, as I said I haven’t tried the other programs, so I hope one of them is a proper alternative

@Akis: Thanks for your comment. I partially agree with you that its not an “alternative” as it doesn’t provide all features which winRAR provides. But for beginners who only want to open RAR files without buying winRAR, then these options are just great to use.

Also, normally people refer Linux as Windows alternative although Linux does not provide the features which Windows provide but Linux does boot up and serve as Operating System. So, according to me an alternative is nothing but the basic stuffs provided rather than all/complete replica of the software. Let me know what your thoughts!
